Silver Lake's Kasey Johnson goes for a rebound against
Franklin's Collin Marks Tuesday in Roseland.
ROSELAND — Silver Lake boys basketball coach Terry Bauer wanted his team to focus on getting off to a hot start in Tuesday's contest against Franklin.
And the Mustangs did just that — for the first 4:30 of the first quarter. After that, Silver Lake let the Flyers back into the game and gave up the lead for much of the second and third quarters. But a strong finish gave the Mustangs a 58-45 victory.
Silver Lake seemed to be in position to put the game away early after jumping out to an 11-0 lead, but in the final 3:30 of the first quarter, Franklin went on its own run, outscoring the Mustangs 11-3 to trail 14-11 at the end of the opening period.
"We've been starting extremely slow the last few ball games and had to dig out of holes, so we really stressed coming out and working hard," said Bauer, whose team won its third straight to improve to 6-8. "It just kind of seemed like we coasted there for a little bit. They hit some big shots there to draw themselves back into the game."
