The St. Cecilia boys basketball team thought it had made things easy for itself when it went on big run in the first half of its game with Lexington.
The Bluehawks jumped out to a 31-17 halftime lead thanks to a second-quarter performance in which STC outscored the Minutemen 20-8.
But Lexington (2-11) didn't back down, cutting an 18-point deficit down to just one point in the second half. But the Bluehawks (5-8) never gave up their lead and held on for nail-biting 50-48 win at Chapman Gymnasium.
"Give Lexington a lot of credit. On the road, and with a team that's struggled like they have ... they make a big run there in the third quarter. There's not a lot we did right," STC head coach Kevin Asher said. "They're a lot better basketball team than their record. It's a win, and I thought our kids executed a few things in the last minute, like getting the ball into right person and things from there.
"With our schedule, we'll take anything we can get."
