Hawkettes cruise, snap losing skid

After playing three straight top-five teams with a combined record of 40-3, the St. Cecilia girls basketball team got some easier competition Tuesday.

And the Class C-2 No. 4 Hawkettes took advantage, cruising to a 57-33 victory over Class B Lexington (4-9) at Chapman Gymnasium to snap a three-game losing skid and improve to 10-4.

The win came on the heels of losses to Grand Island Northwest (12-1), Minden (13-2) and Kearney Catholic (15-0) Jan. 8-12. St. Cecilia also had lost to Fillmore Central (15-1) Jan. 3 before beating Lincoln Christian (9-4) two days later.

"Winning this game was a big boost," said St. Cecilia coach Jahn Kile, whose Hawkettes play at 11-2 Aquinas Catholic on Friday before the Centennial Conference tournament next week. "I feel like we needed this game to get us ready for the upcoming week."

On Tuesday against Lexington, St. Cecilia led just 15-10 after the first quarter but took control in the second quarter by outscoring the Minutemaids 17-9 to take a 32-19 lead into halftime.
