As a 6-foot-9 inch player at Hastings College, Paul Bergman was the center of attraction on the basketball court.
A four-year player on the men’s basketball team in the mid-to-late 1970s, he established himself as a dominant force in the middle in the Bronco lineup on both ends of the court. His abilities were good enough to capture the eye of several semi-professional basketball teams when Hastings College traveled abroad to play games in Finland and Sweden in 1978.
That exposure led to a 15-year professional basketball career in Europe from 1978-93 that included stops in Finland and France.
Yet for all his accolades on the court, Bergman wasn’t always big man on campus. Following the family’s move to Omaha as a youngster, he tried his luck at several sports at Lewis and Clark Middle School, including basketball, the 440 and high jump in track, and wrestling. But nothing really clicked.
