Silver Lake's Mackenzie Skupa puts up a shot against
Lawrence-Nelson's Kara Himmelberg Tuesday night in
Roseland.
ROSELAND — For the Lawrence-Nelson girls basketball team and head coach Cathy Biltoft, the mission against Silver Lake in the quarterfinals of the Twin Valley Conference tournament was simple: Play better defense.
The two teams had met just five days earlier, when the Mustangs humbled the Raiders (3-15) with a 52-28 win.
In the first 2 1/2 quarters of the rematch, the Raiders did exactly what their coach asked.
But in the fourth quarter, the Mustang offense exploded for 10 straight points and eventually outscored the Raiders 19-5 in the final eight minutes to post a 43-27 win Tuesday night.
The win places the Mustangs (13-5) in the semifinals against Class C-2 No. 7 Blue Hill, which defeated Red Cloud 54-24 in its quarterfinal pairing. The game will be played 7:45 p.m. Friday at Adams Central.
