Cyclists endure 1,245 miles at MPH

Jeff Doose of Grand Island competes in the YMCA Road Rage
race Saturday at Motorsport Park Hastings.

After sweating out 5 1/2 hours of intense road cycling and enduring hot and windy conditions, Jeff Doose said he felt like he had reached his limit.

"It was like mile 20 of a marathon," the Grand Island resident said. "I was spent. But I have never quit anything in my life, and I wasn't about to start."

Doose pushed his leg muscles and drew on the support of a pit crew of friends to help him through the final leg of the eight-hour Hastings Road Rage cycling event Saturday at Motorsport Park Hastings.

Doose was one of several dozen cyclists who rode a total of 1,245 miles at the second annual event, which was more about fitness and endurance than competition, said organizer Anne Hessler, health and wellness director at the Hastings Family YMCA.
