YMCA announces pool renovation campaign

class April 2, 2013 at the YMCA.

Ag Processing Inc. donated $50,000 to the Hastings Family YMCA this morning to kick off a fundraising campaign to renovate the indoor swimming pool at the 16th Street location.

YMCA Executive Director Michael Krings said the pool is 35 years old and needs to be repaired. He said many components are in dire need of attention.

"That pool was built in 1979," he said. "It's time to redo it."

While many parts need to be replaced, the most important is the pool shell.

The pool is losing about 3 inches of water each week. Krings said he doesn't know where that water is going, but it creates a safety concern. He has heard of other pools having foundations eroded by water and collapsing.
