Hastings ready to celebrate another Fourth
The usual events are on schedule again this year for celebrating Independence Day in Hastings.
Thursday's festivities start at 10:30 a.m. at Fisher Fountain where YWCA Adams County will host its annual kids parade around the fountain with food and games.
"I love it because of the kids who decorate themselves and participate in the parade. It's a sea of red, white and blue," said Jennifer Lewis, executive director of the YWCA.
The event has been hosted at Fisher Fountain for many years, and Lewis said it has grown continuously, including just more than 1,000 people who attended in 2012.
The morning's activities around the fountain include games, raffles and enjoying food.
Lineup for the parade, which features kids dressed in patriotic colors walking or riding bikes, scooters and even strollers, starts at 11:45 a.m. with the parade at noon.
The parade, which lasts about 30 minutes, includes the sounds of cadence provided by the Hastings High Drum Line.
"It is a wonderful event that brings in several different facets of the community," Lewis said.
From there, families can enjoy the afternoon together before heading to Brickyard Park for the annual concert and fireworks.
Concessions, provided by the Hastings Kiwanis Club, will be available starting at 5:30 p.m. with The Rumbles concert set for 7 p.m.
The Hastings Volunteer Fire Department's fireworks display will kick off at dark or around 10 p.m.
The concert and fireworks display are free and open to the public. However firefighters will be passing the boot to collect donations to cover the cost of next year's fireworks show.
If inclement weather should arise, the concert and fireworks show will be moved to Sunday with all times staying the same.
Questions on the YWCA activities should be made to 402-462-8821 while concert and fireworks questions may be directed to the Hastings Parks and Recreation Department at 402-461-2324.
