CLAY CENTER — Organizers of the Clay County Fair are adding redneck flair this year with the implementation of a new event.
The Redneck Rodeo will take place 7 p.m. Friday with registration at 6:30 p.m. Jenise Bohlen and her husband Ron, who live outside Fairfield, organized the event.
"A bunch of us sat around, thinking this up, so we're going to give it a try," she said. "Hopefully it will be fun, free entertainment and a free activity that we hope to get some people involved in."
The Redneck Rodeo includes versions of regular rodeo events but without a horse. Dummy roping, barrels, poles and goat tying are among the competitions included.
"Every event is going to have a little redneck twist to it," Bohlen said.
The Bohlens helped start the Nuckolls County Fair children's rodeo, which has been going about 20 years. Unlike the Redneck Rodeo, the children's rodeo uses horses.
Having a rodeo without horses, as is the case with the Redneck Rodeo, makes it more inclusive, Bohlen said.
"There's not a lot of kids and adults who have access to horses, so we're just going to try something a little different," she said.
The Redneck Rodeo has three age divisions: 8-11 years old, 12-17 years old, and adult. Competitors in the teenage and adult age divisions work in pairs.
"We're hoping we can get people to come out and participate, plus we also hope people come watch it," Bohlen said. "If they bring their kids, maybe they'll stick around, and if they don't participate maybe they'll stick around and watch it.
"We're just trying to take on another night and see if we can get a crowd out there."
