Various fires sparked on Fourth

A drop in humidity and dry ground was a perfect mix for fires Thursday in Hastings as the city celebrated Independence Day.

Hastings Fire Chief Kent Gilbert said Friday morning that there were several fires in the community, including an outbreak during the city's fireworks show at Brickyard Park.

"This was one of the first Fourth of Julys in my memory that wasn't very hot and humid," Gilbert said. "As the humidity drops, everything burns easier, so I think that was part of it."
