Restaurant's auction stirs memories

An etched mirror reading "Atch's" rests on table during the auction at
Taylor's Steakhouse Tuesday morning. Mike Atchity, former owner of
the property, purchased the mirror.

Mike Atchity could not help but to reminisce during Tuesday's auction at the former Taylor's Steakhouse.
Atchity helped construct the building and operated a restaurant there for 17 years.

"I worked for the construction company that built the place," Atchity said. "I assisted for the brick and block layers. I shoveled the mud so I could support my family."

Atchity's memories are of both good times and bad.

He purchased the old Sportsman Club in 1975. Not long after that, a faulty smoke stack in the kitchen area started a fire in December of that year, destroying the property.

He rebuilt the business — called Atch's — at the same site.

It eventually became one of three similar businesses to open in Hastings, Grand Island and Lincoln.

"I have good memories of the customers. A lot of them have come up to me today," Atchity said.
