Area man crashes homemade aircraft

HARVARD — A rural Clay Center man was treated and released from Memorial Community Health hospital in Aurora following a plane crash near here Wednesday morning.

Eldon Shetler, 79, who lives in the igloo-shaped home east of Clay Center, was transported to Aurora by a Harvard Volunteer Fire Department ambulance following the crash at 11:36 a.m.

Clay County Sheriff Jeff Franklin said this morning that Shetler lifted off from the Harvard Air Base in an experimental aircraft he built himself. Shetler lost control of the aircraft shortly after take off and crashed, upside down, into a nearby cornfield.
