Roseland man narrowly escapes sinkhole

This large 25-foot wide sinkhole appeared early Thursday morning
as Vince Shaw of Roseland was driving his pickup over it on
Powerline Road. The hole was caused by the degradation of a 36-inch
culvert passing under the road that has been failing for some time,
according to Adams County Roads Superintendent Dawn Miller.

HOLSTEIN — Vince Shaw of Roseland is one lucky man.

On Thursday, Shaw was out checking crop damage near Holstein and driving east down Powerline Road to meet a friend.

He was about seven miles southeast of Holstein near Sand Avenue when, suddenly, he was sort of airborne at 40 miles per hour as his pickup skimmed across a big sinkhole in the gravel road.

“For the most part, I didn’t get hurt too bad but the pickup is probably totaled,” Shaw said.
