Farm fatality

RUSKIN — A Ruskin area farmer died near here sometime Wednesday when an auger fell on him, Nuckolls County Sheriff Jim Marr reported.

Jeffrey Schardt, 33, already was deceased when his wife arrived about 5 p.m. and discovered the scene, Marr said. The Schardt farm is one mile east and a half-mile north of Ruskin.

Schardt apparently had finished unloading grain from a bin and was working alone to get the auger, which is on wheels, hooked to a vehicle, the sheriff said.

“He was in the process of moving an auger, and it buckled and collapsed somehow, pinning him underneath it,” Marr said.

Schardt was pinned face-down, up near the wheels, the sheriff said. That type of auger is top-heavy and awkward to move, Marr said, but he did not believe the tube had much grain in it when the collapse occurred.

The Ruskin Volunteer Fire Department and the Deshler fire and ambulance squads responded to the scene, he said.
