Buyers make book purchases up to last minute

Seven-year-old Laura Blake of Grand Island reads "Creatures
of the Desert World" during the Hastings Public Library book
sale Friday at the Hastings City Auditorium.

“Just one more minute!”

Such was the battle cry of people Sunday scrambling to cash in on books by the bagful in the waning minutes of the Friends Of Hastings Public Library’s “Big Top Book Sale” who may have scored some of the best deals of the weekend.

When all was said and done, few of the initial 50,000 books remained to be donated, a sure sign of success at the three-day event, FHPL board member HoneyLou Bonner said this morning.

“(Sunday) was a real good day,” Bonner said. “Each day brings in a different group. Sunday brought in readers who simply were stacking up for the year ahead. They weren’t as finicky about which titles they got: they were more interested in getting a book so they would never be without a book.”
