Hastings firefighters helped extinguish a Grand Island fire that destroyed part of a downtown building Sunday evening.
The fire was inside one large building divided into four sections. Three of the sections collapsed in the fire.
Grand Island Fire Chief Cory Schmidt credited mutual aid to stopping the blaze. Aerial platform trucks were brought in from Hastings and St. Paul to pour water down on the fire.
“They were vital in our getting the fire stopped before it spread to the business to the west,” Schmidt said. “Without the help from Hastings and St. Paul, we could have lost the whole block.”
