Ninth Street closing through college

Hastings College president Don Jackson speaks to the
Hastings City Council Monday night regarding the closure of
9th Street.

After nearly 90 minutes of public debate, the Hastings City Council voted unanimously Monday to close a portion of East Ninth Street that cuts through the Hastings College campus.

Every seat in the council chambers was filled for Monday's public hearing, as several people stepped to the podium to speak their mind about the proposed closing of the street between Elm and Ash avenues.

Eight people spoke in favor of closing the street, while seven spoke who were opposed. Two others who spoke said their position was neutral.

Those speaking in opposition said the street's closing would create traffic flow problems on other streets, including Seventh Street, as well as send motorists a few blocks out of their way to get across town.
