4-H’ers take extra care of bunnies

Thirteen-year-old Bailey Johnson holds on to Sprinkles as a
group of Holland lop bucks are judged during the rabbit
show Wednesday morning at the Adams County Fair.

In amongst judging all the rabbits lined up on a table under a tent Wednesday at the Adams County Fairfest, judge Shannon Ahlman took a slight detour.

He returned indoors to judge one group of rabbits that would not be appearing on the table before the small crowd.

That group is the does and litters of baby bunnies that are safely kept in their cages and only pulled out for a few seconds during judging.

And while most animals are required to stay at the fairgrounds the entire week, that’s not the case for the baby bunnies.

“I will take my doe and litter home after the show,” said 14-year-old 4-H’er Rachel Hinrichs of Glenvil. “I don’t leave them here. There’s too much stress.”
