Mary Lanning Healthcare officials have stepped in to fill the void created when former Adams Central activities director Ron Alexander announced that he no longer would be coordinating the Hastings Marathon.
Becky Sullivan, wellness manager at Mary Lanning, said hospital officials decided to organize and sponsor the marathon, which drew 350 people in 2014, after Alexander made his announcement. The event features a full marathon, a half marathon and a 5k.
“Mary Lanning has long emphasized the importance of living a healthy lifestyle,” Sullivan said. “Assisting with this marathon is one way the organization can encourage area residents to exercise.”
The event started in 2013. This year was the first time a full marathon was included.
It was announced in May that the marathon is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.
Mary Lanning was the primary sponsor for each of the race’s first two years.
Alexander resigned May 20 as Adams Central activities director to take a similar position with the Poudre School District in Fort Collins, Colo. He told the Tribune at the time he hoped Mary Lanning would continue to play a major role in the race’s future.
Sullivan said the Hastings Marathon is a fantastic community event. Volunteer and sponsor support have made it a success.
Planning for the 2015 marathon is just beginning, Sullivan said. Details, along with volunteer and sponsorship needs, will be announced at a later date.
