Then & Now: Woman survives two brushes with death

weighed in at 1 pound, 7 ounces.

Then: When it comes to beating the odds, Nicole Suzanne Shafer is two for two and counting.

Born Nichole Suzanne Douglas on July 9, 1980, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, the now mother of four was given a 15-20 percent chance of survival. That's because she was 3 1/2 months early.

Now: Despite being told by doctors that she could not have children, Nichole and her husband, John, welcomed their first of four sons, Titus, into the world nine years ago on July 26. He was what she refers to as her second life miracle.
