After a brief time serving as interim police chief last year, Sgt. Bill Mann will retire Tuesday from the Hastings Police Department.

Mann acted as interim chief between the resignation of Larry Thoren in August 2012 and the hiring of current chief Peter Kortum in December 2012.

Capt. Gene Boner said Mann helped ensure a smooth transition by avoiding changes in the department. Mann worked with the other officers to keep the department on track until Kortum could take the reins.

"It's just a nice way for him to be able to go out," Boner said. "I just think it's a great way to show appreciation for his service."
