Council hears idea of allowing chickens in city

At least one Hastings City Council member is intrigued with the idea of allowing chickens inside city limits.

At a council work session Tuesday at the Hastings Public Library, Sarah Hoops shared with other council members the concept of allowing citizens to raise chickens in town.

Hoops said Grand Island and Columbus recently allowed chickens within their city limits. This week, Chadron approved allowing residents to keep up to six chickens in an enclosed area that’s at least 20 feet from the sides of the lot.

In addition, Hoops said a growing number of cities across the country are allowing “urban agriculture” to bring food sources closer to cities where people live.
