Giant fern is family heirloom

Carol Kiolbasa of rural Clay Center stands next to the fern
that was given to her parents, Harvey and Pearl Lobb,
shortly before their wedding in 1937. She has cared for the
plant since 1992.

CLAY CENTER — Anyone who enters Jim and Carol Kiolbasa's living room near here instantly notices nearly eight decades of history.

Carol cares for the Boston fern that was used as greenery during her parents wedding in June 1937.

After 76 years, the nameless fern has grown to a diameter of nearly five feet. It sits on a short stand but it is taller than Carol who is 5 feet 2 inches tall.

"I think it's fantastic," her husband said about the plant. "For something that big, plus that it was at her folks' wedding makes it quite a feat. I don't know what to do though if it overtakes our living room."
