Former HPS officer likes outdoors gig

Former Hastings Police officer Scott Eveland instructs a
group of young kayakers at the Kearney Outdoor Discovery
Program in May.

Then: In the nine years Scott Eveland worked at the Hastings Police Department, he could be found leading the D.A.R.E. program or doing boating safety work at Lake Hastings.

Now: Eveland, who began work as a boating safety officer with Nebraska Game & Parks Commission on July 1, 2003, says his typical work days are anything but typical.

In the summer, he can be found patrolling Lake McConaughy by boat or by personal watercraft. During the week, he often teaches boating safety classes.

"It's a mix of education and enforcement, which I love," Eveland said. "Working in places like Lake McConaughy, although I'm there to enforce boating laws, but I run into lots of other things to deal with, as well."
