CLAY CENTER — In sentencing her on Friday morning to pay $55,000 back to the city of Fairfield, Judge Vicky Johnson had tough words for former Fairfield City Clerk Jennifer Bassett.
The 39-year-old Bassett was charged with theft by deception involving more than $1,500. She was accused of embezzling more than $100,000 and using city funds to purchase everything from a cruise to spa supplies.
Theft by deception is a Class 3 felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
Besides the restitution — which includes minimum $500 monthly payments for five years totaling $30,000, plus an additional $25,000 to be paid during that 60 month period — Bassett will serve 60 months of probation and 30 days of jail with work release each year for four years.
