Merrill sparks JIH to shutout win

Johnson Imperial Homes' Zach Merrill pitches against Pleasant
Dale in the fifth inning Tuesday night at Duncan Field.

Zach Merrill provided plenty of fireworks Tuesday night in Johnson Imperial Homes' 9-0 win over Pleasant Dale.

On the mound, the 6-foot right-hander nearly accomplished a perfect game.

Heading into the seventh inning, he only surrendered one base on balls. He hadn't given up any hits until Pleasant Dale hit two singles in its last at bat.

Merrill said he just stayed calm on the mound as he struck out 14 batters — including a stretch where he fanned seven straight.

"I just tried to stay consistent," he said. "I try to stay humble and I don't really get nervous. I like to take it one pitch at a time."
