Sunday.

The Johnson Imperial Homes junior American Legion baseball team finished its own tournament with an exclamation point Sunday, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against Hickman Post 105 (Norris) to end the game via the 10-run mercy rule, 12-2.

Now they're hoping to carry the momentum from the 3-1 performance over the weekend for tonight's Cornhusker League Championship game against Pius X at Sherman Field in Lincoln.

Pitcher Vinny Schmidt earned the complete game win against Hickman, giving up two runs on nine hits while also stranding 11 runners on base.

Head coach Blake Marquardt said his starter kept his composure and didn't give up the big hit.

"He hits his spots and he's got good off-speed, but he pitches to contact. But our defense played really well behind him and he never gave up the big hit," Marquardt said.
