Quick start lifts West over East

GRAND ISLAND — Phoenix Stevenson of Grand Island Home Federal got things going with a two-run homerun in the first inning, then the pitchers went to work and did the rest in the West’s 3-1 victory over the East team in the Cornhusker League All-Star game Tuesday night at Ryder Park.

Two Five Points Bank players, Alex Panganiban and Mason Spilinek, along with their head coach, Russ Kindig, represented Hastings on the winning side.

Panganiban started at first base and finished 0-for-2 at the plate, with one of his at-bats resulting in a line-out to the second baseman.

Spilinek played some at third base and was one of six pitchers who combined to limit the East team to just five hits. Offensively, Spilinek was 0-for-1 with a groundout to first.

The teams convened earlier in the day to meet for the first time with a dinner at Balz Sports Bar.

“I just had a blast,” Panganiban said.
