JIH cruises into Area finals

KEARNEY — The Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes junior legion baseball team wasn't going to leave anything to chance in the Area loser's semifinal against North Platte First Nationals Monday, scoring six runs in the top of the first and never looking back in a 14-2 win ended by the mercy rule.

With the win, JIH earned a spot in the Area 7 championship game against Kearney Post 52 tonight at 5:30 at Memorial Field in Kearney. Hastings has to win two games in order to qualify for the state tournament.

Hastings' first 10 batters reached base, resulting in six runs, four hits and two North Platte errors.

The game also saw an impressive outing for JIH pitchers, as starter Brooks Asher gave up just two hits in three innings of work. He credited his outing to the comfort his offense provided for him with its quick start.

"Scoring six runs in the first inning really helped — it's a good cushion," he said. "You just realize you can throw strikes and let the defense work behind you. We really came out and hit the ball well and jumped out on the pitcher."
