JIH falls in thriller

Johnson Imperial Homes' Zach Merrill bats against Kearney in
the Class A, Area 7 championship game Tuesday night in
Kearney.

KEARNEY — The Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes junior legion baseball team's season hinged on beating Kearney Post 52 twice on the road to win the Class A, Area 7 championship.

Behind a dominating pitching performance from Zach Merrill in a 3-0 victory in game one, that task was half done.

But in game two, Kearney erased a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-RBI walk-off single from Dylan Fruhling to send Post 52 to the state tournament with a 4-3 win.

"I thought we played our butts off," said JIH head coach Russ Kindig, whose team finished the season 32-17. "This is just exactly what we've thought we'd get out of these guys. They've competed all year, but we didn't quite have enough tonight."
