Ethnic traditions passed down through the generations

Passing down traditions to younger generations was important during the 38th annual Czech-Slovak festival Saturday.

Three generations of one family epitomized that effort by working together to prepare ethnic pastries called kolaches for the event.

Mildred Lemke of Hastings, her daughter Marilyn Haba and granddaughter Michelle Haba baked 150 dozen kolaches over four days prior to the event.

“We got to show our grandkids our Czech heritage,” Lemke said. “We’ve got to keep the Czech going.”
