Sen. Les Seiler of Hastings discussed the need for tax reform Saturday at the final Coffee with the Senator at Kitty’s Roadhouse.
On Thursday, the Nebraska Legislature created a committee to study Nebraska’s tax climate. The tax modernization committee will evaluate the current tax code for fairness, competitiveness, simplicity, compliance, stability and adequacy and complementary tax systems and report its findings back to the Legislature.
Seiler said Saturday that this will be the first time the overall tax system has been examined since the last major overhaul in 1967.
While Gov. Dave Heineman’s proposed bills to eliminate the income tax and replace it with a sales tax early in the session were dismissed quickly, Seiler said it started a conversation about taxes.
