SMITH CENTER, Kan. — Lining up four or five deep, Redmen football players who played for Smith Center High School as far back as 1978 surrounded the two men who made decades of success here possible.

Dozens of former football players, trainers and assistant coaches plus several hundred fans of the Redman program gathered Saturday at Smith Center's Hubbard Stadium.

They were all there for a Redmen Football Reunion the summer after longtime head coach Roger Barta and assistant coach Dennis Hutchinson retired. Since Barta took over the program in 1978, the Redmen won eight state championships and had 323 total victories.

All of the players, trainers and coaches gathered for a group photo. Reunion organizer John Baetz, who graduated from Smith Center High School in 1993, said the significance of that photo won't hit those involved until later.
