City pledges $1.25 million, reveals prosposed veterans home site

The Grand Island Veterans Home, originally known as the
Nebraska Soldiers and Sailors Home, opened in 1887 and was
the first veterans home in Nebraska. Hastings is one of four
cities making bids to be the new location for the veterans
home in central Nebraska.

Hastings' bid for the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home includes $1.25 million in city funds and a piece of property on the north edge of the city.

At a special meeting Tuesday morning, the Hastings City Council pledged $1.25 million toward the project and revealed the proposed site of the veterans home would be at the northeast corner of U.S. Highway 281 and Lochland Road East.

Dave Rippe, executive director of the Hastings Economic Development Corporation, said the $1.25 million would come from the city's budget and only represents a portion of the cash component of the city's total bid.
