DAVENPORT — The Little Blue Natural Resources District will implement a program to assist municipalities of all sizes with water system projects following action by the district's board of directors Thursday.
The new program will provide nearly $500,000 to Hastings Utilities over five years for its efforts to reduce nitrate concentrations in the city's drinking water.
LBNRD directors voted 10-4 to establish the program during their regular June meeting at district headquarters in Davenport. The meeting had been rescheduled from Tuesday due to a conflict with a Nebraska Association of Resources Districts event.
The Municipal Water System Assistance Program will provide funding for cities and villages working to remediate problems related to non-point source water pollution.
The designated funding level is $20 per capita, with the total payable in annual installments over five years. Municipalities could apply for the program only once every 10 years.
