Then: For years, the bakery outlet store at 317 S. Elm Ave. has been a place to buy bread and get trays of buns for graduations, parties and other events at discount.

Now: On Wednesday, the store attached to Bimbo Bakery closed its door for the last time while the bakery itself will remain open.

The store at Metz Bakery Co. opened Aug. 1, 1993, after moving from another location. At the time, it was known as the Old Home Bakery Outlet.

When it opened, the store offered a variety of baked goods, including breads, rolls, cakes and doughnuts.

At the time of its closure, the store still offered the baked bread products along with other prepackaged grocery items, including soda, potato chips, muffin, soup and other mixes.

Renee Johnson worked at the bakery store for about 10 years before leaving in 2000.
She started out as a clerk before going into management after about four years on the job.
"It's really a shame that it's closing," she said.
