HU offers incentives for vets home

The Hastings Board of Public Works approved incentives Thursday worth $1.55 million toward the bid to bring the Central Nebraska Veterans Home to Hastings.

The bid, which was submitted to the state of Nebraska Tuesday, gives Hastings the opportunity to compete against Grand Island, Kearney and North Platte to serve as new home to the facility now located in Grand Island.

The incentives from Hastings Utilities include $1.5 million in cash from the economic development jobs fund and $56,000 in electric rate demand reduction during the first two years of operation.

"We do have sufficient funds in the incentive fund to make these commitment," said Chuck Shoemaker, the board chairman. "We are making them with the understanding that there are still other funds in there."
