Fun with fossils at museum

Conner Roberts, 9, checks out a mammoth bone house on
display at the Hastings Museum during the SummerFun
class "Cruisin’ the Fossil Freeway" Tuesday.

With a small scraping tool in hand, 8-year-old Jackson Bristol scraped away at the dirt on the rock in his hands.

Slowly the dirt fell away, revealing the plastic covered bug inside.

“Inside each of these is a diving beetle,” Mark Funkey explained to the group of children. “This is what the diving beetle looks like.”

“That looks gross,” said Johanna Winfield, 10.

“Eww, I’m not touching that,” added Lauran Sidlo, 9.

The girls were just two of the more than a dozen campers involved in the Cruisin’ the Fossil Freeway day camp Tuesday at the Hastings Museum.
