Diabetes Camp a fun, educational experience

For Destiny Barnacle, 12, of Grand Island, getting picked on by classmates for having Type 1 diabetes is a hurtful reminder that ignorance and meanspiritedness are never too far away.

"They would be like, 'You ate too much sugar' or 'You're overweight, that's why you got diabetes,' she said.

Both are common misperceptions about Type 1 diabetes, a disorder of the human immune system that makes it difficult for the body to produce insulin.
