Building slated for demolition collapses

An empty single-story building owned by Matheson Linweld specialty gas company in the 1100 block of South Burlington Avenue collapsed late Sunday afternoon, spilling debris onto Burlington Avenue that took city workers more than an hour to clear.

No one was injured in the incident, which was reported by several eyewitnesses across the way at Lincoln Park, Hastings Fire Department Chief Kent Gilbert said this morning.

Thunderstorms producing high winds that blasted Hastings on June 14 and again on Friday night most likely contributed to the collapse, Gilbert said.
