Fishing derby draws 45 youth

Jordan Just, 12, caught 14 fish in 90 minutes Saturday at the
Kid’s Fishing Tournament at Lake Hastings. He was rewarded
with a new rod and reel as he won his age division.

As he held the line with the small fish dangling from the hook, 5-year-old Grayhm Beck was ready to go again.

“I’m gonna cast it again because I caught a crappie,” he said. “That was the first crappie I caught.”

Grayhm, who lives near Edgar, was one of 45 kids ages 5 to 16 to participate in the annual Fishing Derby hosted by the Hastings Parks and Recreation Department at Lake Hastings Saturday.

“It’s kind of a unique event that maybe not all kids get out and do,” said Ryan Martin, the city’s recreation superintendent.
