When Tess Wahlmeier heard the disappointment in the voices of the seniors at St. Cecilia High School at the news there would be no musical in 2012, she stepped up.
Wahlmeier, who was a sophomore at the time, and a classmate approached the administration about putting on a student-run musical that spring.
The principal and superintendent gave the students a $500 budget and in a month’s time Wahlmeier, as the student director, put on “The Best of Broadway” in the spring 2012.
“We didn’t have much adult help,” Tess said of herself and the 20 classmates. “So I picked out the music and scenes we were going to do and we ordered music online.”
The story of that production helped earn Tess a $10,000 ACA Achiever scholarship. The scholarships, which are awarded to one student per state, are for graduating seniors who demonstrated ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals and the ability to succeed in college.
