NRD cancels dam, reservoir project
DAVENPORT — Members of the Little Blue Natural Resources District's Projects and Planning Committee rejected a proposal to construct a dam two miles north of here.
Committee members voted 6-2 during their meeting Tuesday to not proceed with a project that called for a reservoir with a surface area of about 620 acres at a cost of $23.2 million. The reservoir would have included groundwater recharge, flood control and recreation benefits.
A smaller dam, about a third of that size and without recreation uses, had also been proposed at a cost of $11.8 million.
More than 100 people attended a June 6 meeting to express displeasure for the proposed dam.
"The comment was made before there's always a few people against," said Rich Kahman of Fairfield, a member of the NRD's projects and planning committee. "I think this is a more than a few people. We had one positive letter? I think it's time to put this to bed."
