Grand Island downs Cardinals 19-11

Doniphan-Trumbull's Kalen Garrett pitches against Grand
Island U-Save Thursday night in Doniphan.

DONIPHAN — After 1 1/2 innings between Grand Island U-Save and Doniphan-Trumbull Post 300, no one in attendance could’ve guessed that they were about to witness a three-plus hour marathon baseball game.

U-Save jumped out to an 11-0 lead over the Cardinals after just two at-bats, sending 14 batters to the plate in an eight-run second inning. It looked to be a runaway.

But the Doniphan-Trumbull players didn’t see it that way.

The Cardinals bounced back in the bottom of the second inning with seven runs to cut the deficit to just four, leading to a back-and-forth showdown that ultimately ended in a 19-11 victory for U-Save.
