Big first inning propels D/E

Davenport/Edgar's Ty Van Cleef beats the throw to
Doniphan-Trumbull first baseman Grady Koch on a pickoff
attempt in the third inning Thursday night in Edgar.

EDGAR — The Davenport/Edgar American Legion senior baseball team didn't waste any time in taking control of its game against Doniphan-Trumbull.

After a 1-2-3 inning on the mound for pitcher Luke Christensen to start the game, D/E scored eight runs in the bottom of the first en route to cruising to a 13-3 win Thursday night. The first seven hitters in the lineup scored a run in the opening inning, as Davenport/Edgar (4-1) sent 13 batters to the plate.

"This is the best we've hit the ball. The Doniphan kids threw the ball pretty nice, especially (Nathaniel Armon). We just have not hit the ball worth a darn yet, but tonight they just stood in there," D/E coach Rod Tegtmeier said. "It seemed like we were swinging at strikes, letting balls go and just doing things the right way. It was an improvement."
