The Sunmart store at 920 S. Burlington Ave. has announced to its employees that the grocery store will close March 26.
According to a news release from Sunmart's parent company SpartanNash, the building's lease expires in June.
"And based on the financial performance of the store, it did not warrant renewing," the release states. "While it's never an easy decision to close a corporate retail store, due to competitive pressure in the area, we felt it was the right thing to do in order to remain competitive as a whole in corporate retail."
The store, which includes a pharmacy, floral department and liquor mart, currently employs 40 part-time and full-time workers.
In the release, SpartanNash representatives thanked the store's employees for their service.
"We greatly appreciate all the hard work and dedication that our store associates have demonstrated to SpartanNash and their community over the years and will support them through this transition process," the release states.
Another Sunmart store was located on the Imperial Mall property. It closed in 2005.
