'Reading is so important'

Nebraska first lady Sally Ganem shares stories about the
book "C is for Cornhusker" by Rajean Luebs Shepherd to
students at Morton Elementary Friday. Holding the book is
Morton fifth-grader Erika Hernandez.

One group of Hastings elementary students got the chance to celebrate the birthdays of both Nebraska and Dr. Seuss with a special guest Friday.

Sally Ganem, the state's first lady, visited with the students at Morton Elementary during the Monthly Motivator Program to talk about Nebraska and the power of reading.

"Today is Dr. Seuss' birthday, and reading is so important," Ganem told the third- through fifth-grade students. "Do you know how long the governor spends reading every day because he gets stacks of things to read?"

Ganem told the students how her husband, Gov. Dave Heineman, will spend a minimum of three hours reading newspapers, books and official state government documents each day.
