Husband, wife directors share friendly music battles

It was a classic scene: red team vs. blue team.

Representing red, Kymbre Veilleux led a brassy sounding band to cheer on the Sutton Fillies in the Class C-2, District 4 championship game against St. Cecilia Friday night.

Wearing blue, Ben Veilleux wielded a trumpet and headed the St. Cecilia Bluehawk band in what he described as “a battle of basketball, as well as a battle of the bands.”

It wasn’t the first time that Kymbre and Ben have led their prospective cheering sections against one another, and it won’t be the last. But, in sports and in life, the married couple knows that a little friendly competition keeps things interesting.

“We’re pretty competitive anyway, so we joke a lot about whose band is better,” Ben said.

Ben, a 2012 graduate of Hastings College, and Kymbre, a 2011 alum, both studied music education at Hastings College and met in the music program there. They were active members of the Hastings College Marching Bronco Band and other college music ensembles. They tied the knot in June 2013.
