the Hawkettes in the Class C-2 championship game Saturday
morning in Lincoln. Both have older siblings who won state
titles for St. Cecilia.
LINCOLN — For many of the St. Cecilia girls basketball players stepping on the court Saturday morning at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, it was a new experience.
But several of those players had been there before, just maybe not suited up in their basketball jerseys.
Eight players on the Hawkettes' roster have older siblings who won at least one state title for St. Cecilia, on the 2011 girls state championship or one of the boys teams that won three straight titles from 2008-10.
Unfortunately for the St. Cecilia faithful, this year's trip to Devaney didn't go as well as the previous four title games. St. Cecilia fell to undefeated Crofton 43-31 in the Class C-2 state championship, ending a streak of eight straight wins at Devaney for an STC team.
"There are like five of us who have older brothers who were on the three-peat teams," said junior Morgan Nikkila, whose older brother Riley was part of St. Cecilia's 2008 boys championship team. "We noticed that, and we were talking about that. It's really cool. We know that they wanted us to win it just like they did. They know the feeling."
