Little crosses, big impact

A group of seniors from First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is making it easier for believers to carry their everyday crosses in life.

Cross ministry members have been fashioning small, wooden red cedar crosses for distribution to anyone who wants one since September 2009. The primary purpose behind the 3 1/2- to 4-inch crosses is to provide comfort to those going through difficult times in their lives. Recipients vary: hospital patients headed to surgery, those dealing with the loss of loved ones, and anyone open to receive whatever graces may be conferred upon them through these tokens of Christian faith.

Steve Mohling, who hosts the twice-a-week gatherings with a core group of seven others, said he is humbled to be part of such a powerful ministry. Little did he and the others know when they took the lead from a carving class at the church and converted it to a larger-scale production that there would be such a powerful response to their labors.
